By gaining access to all of the fiction found in the large library of content generated by Tolkien, EA can recreate any number of storylines or battles from the long history of Middle-earth. Aside from just making sense that both, this game would have been a lot more ridiculous otherwise.

Uniting the Lord of the Ring book and movie licenses was a big deal for EA. We finally had the chance to lay hands on an early build of the game for some quick multiplayer as well as a look at the War of the Ring mode and one of the game's newest powers, Tom Bombadill.

Telling the tale of the wars raging in the north (the movies took place mostly in the south) between elves, dwarves and the armies of Mordor, this sequel tapers back on the hand-holding that turned many veteran gamers off in the original. The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth II is their attempt at that. Now that EA has the attention of the masses, they want to latch back onto the hardcore RTS gamers as well. The focus on creating a game that appeals to the masses rather than real-time strategy gamers was a calculated move to capitalize on a powerful license. That's not saying the game wasn't good, in fact, there were some terrific interface ideas and was a very strong showing for the license, it just wasn't as deep a game as we had hoped for. The first Battle for Middle-earth held so much promise that we couldn't help but be a little disappointed by what was there in the end.
